Teacher Information

This page helps teachers explain the competition to students. It also provides ideas for a weekly check-in with students to help them make good progress towards the deadline.

Introducing the Competition:

Students analyse and improve products used by their school so that they meet the needs of the circular economy. Multiple resources are available at https://beworldclass.org/circular-product-competition/  to guide students through the process. Schools and students can start the project at any point after the 15th of May until the 21st of July deadline. Students should expect to spend a minimum of 1 hour a week, and it is suggested they do this in their own time, with a maximum of 15 minutes a week of teacher input and support. There is no limit to the number of students that can be involved, and it is available to all year groups.

Students must select a product used in their school, analyse this product in relation to the needs of the circular economy and then set out to redesign the product. Students will need to communicate their idea in a way that they choose for example by submitting a presentation, promotional video, poster, or documented prototype which:

  • Assesses the issues with the product they have selected, including deeper research of an ecological issue connected to the product.
  • Provides a solution to minimise the ecological issue they have identified.
  • Provides a solution which extends the lifespan and use of the product.
  • Provides a solution for remanufacturing or recycling at the end of the products life.
  • Demonstrates how the product will benefit the economy, society and environment.
  • Provides a reflection on how they have developed in relation to the 6 characteristics of circular economy leaders.

I will be a leader in the circular economy because:

“Through dedication, perseverance, and continual improvement, I am committed to driving innovation, promoting sustainability, and creating positive change”.

Roles of Teachers and Students:

There is no requirement for teachers to be involved in this competition, except as a liaison between BWC and the students. However, teachers might want to facilitate a weekly check-in session (15 minutes).

The emphasis is on students to drive their progress through the competition, using the resources provided on the BWC website. Students are

Weekly Check-ins:

There is an advantage to gathering a group together each week so they can form an accountability and support group. A series of prompts can provide structure and stimulate discussion:

  • What has been a ‘win’ for you this week? (what’s gone well? progress made? how has the week’s work played to existing strengths? how have you developed?)
  • What has been your greatest challenge this week? (the group can provide advice and support)
  • What is your goal for next week? (SMART)
